Merino Muster – New Zealand’s Inaugural Ski Classics Challengers
The Merino Muster, a 42-kilometer freestyle long-distance skiing race, becomes part of the Ski Classics Challengers circuit this Saturday in Wanaka, New Zealand.
Now in its 29th year, the Merino Muster is a celebrated long-distance skiing event that joins the Ski Classics Challengers series and marks the first such event in New Zealand on August 31 (August 30 in Europe).

“Participate in the 2024 Merino Muster and glide over the stunning Mt. Pisa range at New Zealand’s premier cross-country skiing venue, Snow Farm NZ. This annual event is essential for any cross-country skier’s bucket list as it honors the yearly mustering of Merino sheep from the highlands for winter grazing.”

The LOC states, “There are five events available on race day, tailored to varying fitness levels and experiences (or ages), ensuring fun for both seasoned skiers and complete beginners.”

As part of the Ski Classics Challengers event, participants in the 42km race can earn points towards the Ski Classics Champion and Youth competitions in their respective categories.
